Istanbul The Lights Festival
Explore a world where art meets innovation, featuring exclusive exhibitions, captivating digital installations, and unique works from emerging and established artists around the globe.
Istanbul The Lights Festival, inaugurated in December 2021, illuminated the city with a spectacular array of art installations, providing a new reason to celebrate the end of a challenging year. Organized by the Contemporary Istanbul Foundation and supported by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the festival featured over 50 installations by 35 artists, both local and international. The artworks were strategically placed around the city, transforming familiar public spaces into mesmerizing displays of light and art.
The festival's curators, Esra Özkan and Ayça Okay, aimed to create a dialogue between art and society by using light installations to surprise and delight both locals and visitors. The installations were located in prominent areas such as Taksim Square, Macka Park, Besiktas Square, and Istanbul International Airport. This placement allowed for safe social distancing while still engaging the community in a shared cultural experience. Highlights included works by renowned artists like Refik Anadol and Memo Akten, whose pieces captivated audiences with their innovative use of light and technology.
One of the standout attractions was the "The Borders" by the art collective Under1Min, a massive circular structure made of LED screens situated at Istanbul Airport. This installation, along with others, transformed everyday spaces into extraordinary artistic experiences, emphasizing the festival's goal of integrating art into the daily lives of people. The light displays on subway and city screens, as well as in shopping malls, further extended the festival's reach, creating a city-wide celebration of light and art.
FAAR Gallery's participation in Istanbul The Lights Festival showcased its commitment to pushing the boundaries of contemporary art. By contributing to this innovative event, FAAR Gallery helped to highlight the importance of public art and its role in enhancing urban environments. The festival not only provided a platform for artists to display their work but also brought joy and inspiration to the city's residents and visitors during the festive season.
