Clay is the most tactile material - sincere and honest, like something from the very beginning of this world 🪐
28 Oct - 4 Nov 2024
IRINA DENEV is a London-based ceramic sculptor. She creates artworks, using special techniques which are based on archaeological finds. Her artworks reflect the fragility of her personal journey as an artist with severe visual impairment. Irina has a rare genetic condition, retinitis pigmentosa, also known as Usher syndrome, which makes her legally blind. She has completely lost sight in her left eye, while narrow, restricted vision in her right eye provides her with a small window through which she can still appreciate the beauty of this world.
To sophisticated and ever exploring souls, Irina's ceramic artworks offer something beyond visual aesthetics and beauty. Her artworks are not just about shapes; they transcend what the eye can see. Irina creates sensual and tangible art in the form of the human body as a vase. The unglazed surface feel like bare skin, embodying the purest essence of human soul. The vase serves as a conceptual symbol of a human body, representing the sacred origin of the world, living flesh, and a container for the beating heart from which the soul emerges.
Clay, as a material, is conceptualised by Irina as representing something from the very beginning of Earth's creation. It is the first and most primitive material - the earth IRINADENEV itself - from which everything comes and into which everything returns; there is no beginning and no end. Irina's special technique involves floating lines of coiled clay which give a sensual texture and appear to spiral into infinity in endless cycles of birth and rebirth giving a feeling of immortality and eternity. In her words, 'life's fabric is like the texture of my ceramics, spinning and weaving unique rich patterns at every single moment'
Irina's artworks exude the eternal electric connection between feminine and masculine principles. Her art is timeless, yet as fragile as life itself and as precious as love. It evokes sensual and passionate emotions - meaningful feelings through which we experience and appreciate life. To Irina, her vases are more than art. They embody her message to future generations about lives and passions of today's society and the passage of time, and a legacy she wishes to leave to the world.
